About the Provider

Anjani Pillarisetty, MD, is an attending rheumatologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As a board-certified rheumatologist, Dr. Pillarisetty sees patients for autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis, myositis, gout, and pseudogout, with a clinical interest in sarcoidosis.

As a certified provider in musculoskeletal ultrasound by the American College of Rheumatology, Dr. Pillarisetty specializes in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound to both diagnose and treat rheumatic diseases. Her treatment methods include a combination of medications (oral, injectable, and infusions), biologic agents, and ultrasound-guided joint injections and aspirations.

Dr. Pillarisetty is dedicated to the continued progress of her field and is involved in research initiatives to further the understanding of rheumatic diseases. Her research efforts have focused on identifying factors that predict which patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis are at risk for flareups and analyzing the safety and efficacy of biologics in the treatment of cardiac sarcoidosis.

Dr. Pillarisetty received her medical degree from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India before joining MedStar Georgetown University Hospital/MedStar Washington Hospital Center for a three-year residency in internal medicine. She continued her training with MedStar in a two-year specialty fellowship in rheumatology, where she served as Chief Fellow. She is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and the Rheumatism Society of the District of Columbia.

As a devoted advocate for her patients, Dr. Pillarisetty is passionate about raising awareness, increasing research initiatives, and providing high-quality treatments for sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is currently an underdiagnosed condition that can involve many organs of the body, including the heart and lungs. She hopes to bring much-needed attention and awareness to this disorder in order to improve diagnostic measures and develop new treatment options.

Philosophy of Care
“In the last decade, there has been a wide array of new medications and therapy options that have become available to our patients, and each year there’s something new. It’s an exciting time to be in rheumatology!

“I provide state-of-the-art treatment options to patients with rheumatic diseases. My main role as a physician, apart from making an accurate diagnosis, is clearly and effectively presenting information to my patients. In order for my patients to make an informed decision, it is my responsibility to educate them on their diagnosis, the treatment options, and the risks and benefits of each treatment option. My patients should be just as involved in their care as I am.

“I am my patients’ best advocate. Each person has a treatment goal, and that can look different for every patient. I truly listen to my patients in order to understand their concerns and what they hope to accomplish with treatment. We are both working towards a common goal: Achieving their best health.”
