About the Provider

Dr. Arthur Flatau, III, MD, is Site Director for Vascular Surgery at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Dr. Flatau’s treatment methods are focused around minimally-invasive endovascular surgery. If a patient’s condition cannot be treated conservatively, he will do whatever possible to correct the problem with minimal intervention in order to reduce the likelihood of complications and recovery time for the patient.

While Dr. Flatau treats a number of conditions, the most common treatment therapies he performs are for carotid occlusive disease, stroke prevention, aortic aneurysm, lower-extremity revascularization, renal artery stenosis, mesenteric occlusive disease, dialysis access, venous disease, and venous insufficiency (varicose veins).

As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Flatau is dedicated to serving his patients and focuses heavily on understanding the conditions he sees and treats every day. He believes in practicing within a community to gain patients’ trust and establish the best possible quality of care. As part of this commitment, he regularly attends meetings and trainings to maintain MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Vascular Surgery Program at the vanguard of vascular surgery treatments.

Dr. Flatau received his medical degree from the University of South Florida School of Medicine. He then completed a residency in general surgery, followed by a fellowship in vascular surgery, also at the University of South Florida. Dr. Flatau came to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital to take on more difficult cases and to increase the presence of vascular surgery throughout the MedStar system.

Philosophy of Care
“Most of the conditions we treat we continue to monitor, so patients become like family. You build a special relationship with your patients. The relationship is important so that if their leg is bothering them in the middle of the night, they feel comfortable contacting me. We have an open door policy and we let our patients know that we’re always available if they have a problem."

“I only make recommendations I would support for a family member and go to great lengths to care for my patients as such."
