About the Provider

Joseph William Myers, MD, specializes in anesthesiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital where he is an associate professor and director of OB Anesthesia. Dr. Myers is board certified in anesthesiology and credentialed in hyperbaric medicine.

His practice focuses on safety and pain control for pregnant, geriatric and critically ill patients. He emphasizes empathy in his approach to patients and family.

Dr. Myers is passionate about patient safety. He is co-chairman of MedStar Georgetown's Patient Safety First Committee and conducts research on the effective use of surgical and labor epidural Time Out checklists.

Active in the study of non-narcotic analgesics, Dr. Myers has developed protocols for anesthesia similar to those of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society. Based on the ComfortSafe Pyramid, these non-narcotic techniques emphasize comfort, safety, rapid awakening and avoidance of side effects. They help patients return home sooner by decreasing the likelihood of nausea or vomiting and reducing confusion in elderly patients.

Dr. Myers is a native of McLean, Va. where he attended Langley High School, playing football and baseball. He is an avid fisherman. His undergraduate degree is from Brown University and he earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia before coming to MedStar Georgetown for internship and residency.
