About the Provider

Nidhi Malhotra, MD, is a staff gastroenterologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Malhotra specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis; microscopic colitis; and celiac disease. Her areas of interest include dysplasia screening in ulcerative colitis with chromoendoscopy (a special endoscopic procedure that uses a staining technique to identify precancerous lesions), dilation of strictures as a result of Crohn’s disease, perianal disease in Crohn’s disease, refractory pouchitis, and nutrition in IBD. She also has a special interest in IBD and pregnancy, including pre-pregnancy counseling in women with active and well-controlled IBD. She also works closely with the high-risk obstetrician during a patient’s pregnancy and peripartum time period as well as with the pediatrician for babies born to women with IBD.

Dr. Malhotra received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine before completing a residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in gastroenterology & hepatology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She then continued her training with an advanced fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Malhotra is a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (CCF). She is also actively involved in IBD REACH (Rising Educators, Academicians and Clinicians Helping Inflammatory Bowel Disease).

Inflammatory bowel disease is a complicated disorder and requires a well integrated, thoughtful, and individualized diagnostic and treatment approach. Additionally, it requires close attention to the patient’s overall health, not only placing emphasis on physical health but also mental, sexual, and overall health in order to achieve an excellent response to treatment and to improve the patient’s overall quality of life. Dr. Malhotra works and collaborates closely with the colorectal surgeons at MedStar Washington in a team approach to treat complicated diagnoses of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Dr. Malhotra is interested in bringing new and upcoming treatments for inflammatory bowel disease to the patients in the greater Washington, DC, area.

Philosophy of Care

“With inflammatory bowel disease, you have to think of the patient as a whole and not just the disease in isolation. IBD can be very challenging and affect all aspects of life, including mental health, sexual health, and social well being, in addition to physical health. Addressing all these aspects is essential to ensuring optimal health of the patient and achieving improved outcomes with therapy. I care deeply about the personal relationships I build with my patients over time. IBD is a lifelong chronic condition. Trust between the physician and the patient, therefore, is imperative.

“Referring physicians should expect closed-loop communication from me. As we are part of the same community, giving back and making more patients healthier is achieved by working together.”
