About the Provider

Preetham Kumar, MD, is a Cardiologist at the Heart and Vascular Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Kumar specializes in advanced echocardiography based imaging of the heart during interventional and intraoperative cardiac procedures. He also practices clinical cardiology in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Kumar’s prior training in psychiatry, internal medicine, and subsequent subspecialty training in cardiology have created a foundation for his cardiology practice, which focuses on the interface between the mind and the conditions of the heart.

Dr. Kumar received his medical degree from Bangalore University in Bangalore, India. He then completed residency training in psychiatric medicine at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore, India, before continuing his training at the Leicestershire Partnership Trust in Leicester, United Kingdom. He joined Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida for a three-year fellowship in cardiovascular disease, where he also served as Chief Administrative Fellow. Before joining MedStar Washington Hospital Center, he completed a specialty fellowship in advanced cardiovascular imaging in echocardiography at the Mayo Clinic campus in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Kumar is passionate about providing comprehensive clinical cardiac care and echocardiographic imaging to evaluate and guide cardiac structural and surgical interventions for patients in the Washington, DC, area. His research interests include echocardiographic evaluation of the efficacy of percutaneous mechanical support devices.
